Community Developmental Disability Organizations

In Kansas, a CDDO is the single point of entry for individuals with I/DD to access long-term services and supports. Families contact their local CDDO to determine eligibility, get placed on the statewide waiting list if needed, and connect with service providers for supports such as residential, employment, or community resources.

HCBS Waivers (Home and Community-based Services)

In Kansas, people with I/DD can get services through Medicaid’s HCBS waiver program, which covers supports like personal care, residential services, employment help, and respite. Right now, the HCBS waitlist is very long—about 8–10 years. You can be tested for eligibility and added to the waitlist through your local CDDO. Families may also choose to pay privately for services while waiting or if they don’t qualify for Medicaid.

People with IDD and their families may need to contact an attorney for support with important legal matters, such as guardianship, estate planning, special needs trusts, or disputes about services and benefits. An attorney can help explain options, protect rights, and ensure decisions are made in the individual’s best interest. This information is for general purposes only and should not be considered legal advice. Please consult a qualified attorney for guidance specific to your situation.
